OPENING

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)
Blessed be God,
because he has not rejected my prayer
or removed his steadfast love from me!  (Psalm 66:20)
Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)

O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth will declare Your praise.  (Psalm 51:15)
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
Make haste to help me, O Lord.  (Psalm 70:1)

Glory be to the Father and to the + Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever.  Amen.

Father in Heaven, You speak out for us and declare that You do not stop toiling until the appointed day of our eternal rest in Your presence at the great wedding feast of the Lamb.  Give us the mind of Christ so that we too may labor daily in preparation for His coming.  Glory to the Father we sing and glory to + Christ our King and glory be to the Holy Spirit, one God blessed Trinity, now and forevermore.  Amen.

If you are using an advent wreath, light the first and second candles now.
Jesus Christ, You are the Light of the world that no darkness can overcome; for the shadow of death flees from You.  Keep us from sin and straighten our path, so that we may be prepared for Your coming.  Amen.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”  (Revelation 21:3-4)

MEDITATION

The Day is Surely Drawing Near
Bartholomäus Ringwaldt, 1532-99; tr. Philip A. Peter, 1832-1919, alt.
Stanzas 1, 5-7

1
The day is surely drawing near
When Jesus, God’s anointed,
In all His power shall appear
As judge whom God appointed.
Then fright shall banish idle mirth,
And flames on flames shall ravage earth
As Scripture long has warned us.
5
My Savior paid the debt I owe
And for my sin was smitten;
Within the Book of Life I know
My name has now been written.
I will not doubt, for I am free,
And Satan cannot threaten me;
There is no condemnation!
6
May Christ our intercessor be
And through His blood and merit
Read from His book that we are free
With all who life inherit.
Then we shall see Him face to face,
With all His saints in that blest place
Which He has purchased for us.
7
O Jesus Christ, do not delay.
But hasten our salvation;
We often tremble on our way
In fear and tribulation
O hear and grant our fervent plea:
Come, mighty judge, and set us free
From death and ev’ry evil.

SCRIPTURE

O Lord, have mercy on us.

A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke the twenty-third chapter.

Thanks be to God.

One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”  But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?  And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”  And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”  And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.  Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.  Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”  And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.  And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.  (Luke 23:39-49)

In many and various ways, God spoke to His people by the prophets.
But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

PRAYERS

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.

O Lord hear my prayer.
And let my cry come to You.

Heavenly Father, You have fixed all times and seasons according to Your will.  Continually do You order, create and sustain all things through the Word by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Righteous God, Three Persons yet One God, Your judgments have been foretold and by Your mercy they have been delayed until the Bridegroom’s returning so that Your promises may take root in our hearts and the work of Christ produce a bountiful harvest among Your children through faith.  Father grant us open eyes to see and ears that hear Your Word and hearken to the call of the Great Shepherd and in following Him by the aid and power of the Comforter, may serve You in all obedience.  Grant us joy at the coming of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.  Amen.

CLOSING

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.  Amen.

The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit bless and preserve us.  Amen.
