OPENING

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)
I will come into your house with burnt offerings;
I will perform my vows to you,
that which my lips uttered
and my mouth promised when I was in trouble.
I will offer to you burnt offerings of fattened animals,
with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams;
I will make an offering of bulls and goats.  (Psalm 66:13-15)
Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)

O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth will declare Your praise.  (Psalm 51:15)
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
Make haste to help me, O Lord.  (Psalm 70:1)

Glory be to the Father and to the + Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever amen.

Father God we have cried out to You.  We have cried out to from the depths of woe and You have heard us.  Father You answered our pleas with the cry of an infant lying in a manger.  As He grew He proclaimed the good news of Your Kingdom and secured the Gospel’s power by His blood.  We praise You and thank You this day, and every day on the Way for You have done wonderful things.  Glory to the Father we sing and glory to + Christ our King and glory be to the Holy Spirit, one God blessed Trinity, now and forevermore.  Amen.

If you are using an advent wreath, light the first and second candles now.
Jesus Christ, You are the Light of the world that no darkness can overcome; for the shadow of death flees from You.  Keep us from sin and straighten our path, so that we may be prepared for Your coming.  Amen.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”  (Revelation 21:3-4)

MEDITATION

Savior of the Nations, Come
Attr. Ambrose of Milan, 340-397
Stanzas 1 & 2

1
Savior of the nations, come,
Virgin’s Son, make here Your home!
Marvel now, O heav’n and earth,
That the Lord chose such a birth.
2
Not by human flesh and blood,
By the Spirit of our God,
Was the Word of God made flesh
Woman’s offspring pure and fresh.

SCRIPTURE

O Lord, have mercy on us.

A reading from the Prophet Malachi, the fourth chapter.

Thanks be to God.

“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.  But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.  And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the LORD of hosts.

“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.  And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”  (Malachi 4:1-6)

In many and various ways, God spoke to His people by the prophets.
But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

PRAYERS

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.

O Lord hear my prayer.
And let my cry come to You.

Lord God who reigns You are our banner and guard.  You proceed us far ahead and follow us close behind so that none may take us away from You or ambush us on the Way.  Everywhere the enemy, that great dragon who is the devil, lay in what seeking to snatch us away from You and bring us again into captivity; but You have freed us forevermore from his power.  Test us and try Lord, refine and purify us so that we may glorify Your name.  Fill us with the joy of hearing Your good news of happiness, peace and salvation.  You continually fill our cups with blessing so that that they overflow in every season, both in times of bounty and times of wanting.  Father You proceed us far ahead and follow us close behind, and though we cannot see You, we know You are there leading us toward the advent of our King and the New Jerusalem that lays in wait.  In that place we will see You face to face, beautiful Savior we can hardly wait to sing before Your thrown our unending praises.  Preserve us in peace until that great and glorious day.  All praise be to God the Father God the + Son and God the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.  Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.  Amen.

CLOSING

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.  Amen.

The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit bless and preserve us.  Amen.
