OPENING

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)
Bless our God, O peoples;
let the sound of his praise be heard,
who has kept our soul among the living
and has not let our feet slip.
For you, O God, have tested us;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
You brought us into the net;
you laid a crushing burden on our backs;
you let men ride over our heads;
we went through fire and through water;
yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.  (Psalm 66:8-12)
Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)

O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth will declare Your praise.  (Psalm 51:15)
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
Make haste to help me, O Lord.  (Psalm 70:1)

Glory be to the Father and to the + Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever amen.

Father God we have cried out to You.  We have cried out to and You have heard us.  Faithful Father You speak tender words of comfort and promise that are our refreshment.  We praise and laud Your name, for there are none like You who show such steadfast love to Your children.  Glory to the Father we sing and glory to + Christ our King and glory be to the Holy Spirit, one God blessed Trinity, now and forevermore.  Amen.

If you are using an advent wreath, light the first and second candles now.
Jesus Christ, You are the Light of the world that no darkness can overcome; for the shadow of death flees from You.  Keep us from sin and straighten our path, so that we may be prepared for Your coming.  Amen.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”  (Revelation 21:3-4)

MEDITATION

Once He Came in Blessing
Johann Horn, c. 1490-1547; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78, sts. 1, 4, alt.
Stanzas 1 & 4

1
Once He came in blessing,
All our sins redressing;
Came in likeness lowly,
Son of God most holy;
Bore the cross to save us;
Hope and freedom gave us.
4
Come, then, O Lord Jesus,
From our sins release us.
Keep our hearts believing,
That we, grace receiving,
Ever may confess You
Till in heav’n we bless You.

SCRIPTURE

O Lord, have mercy on us.

A reading from the Prophet Malachi, the third chapter.

Thanks be to God.

“Your words have been hard against me, says the LORD. But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’  You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the LORD of hosts?  And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’ ”

Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name.  “They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.  Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.  (Malachi 3:13-18)

In many and various ways, God spoke to His people by the prophets.
But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

PRAYERS

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.

O Lord hear my prayer.
And let my cry come to You.

God of Glory You revealed Yourself to Moses as “I am who I am.”  You are God and we are not like You, for You alone are our Creator and all things in heaven and upon the earth are Your creation.  Hidden God who reveals Himself to His creation You have shown us a love that endures beyond time’s ending.  God of Suffering in our own flesh You secured forgiveness at the cost of Your own blood.  Boldly now we proclaim that You, You alone are He who blots out our transgressions and makes us whiter than snow for the sake of the greatest name of all, Jesus Christ our Lord.  For His sake and by His work we are made holy and righteous by Your will Heavenly Father, sealed by the power and promise of Your Holy Spirit.  Come Lord God of Heaven and Earth and receive our humble praises and prayers as sweet incense offered to You with all thanksgiving.  You have taken our sin as the only gift we had to offer and given us in return new life.  All praise be to God the Father God the  Son and God the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.  Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.  Amen.

CLOSING

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.  Amen.

The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit bless and preserve us.  Amen.
