OPENING

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
All the earth worships you
and sings praises to you;
they sing praises to your name.”  (Psalm 66:3-4)
Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!  (Psalm 66:1-2)

O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth will declare Your praise.  (Psalm 51:15)
Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
Make haste to help me, O Lord.  (Psalm 70:1)

Glory be to the Father and to the + Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever amen.

Heavenly Father, as we begin a new week in our Advent journey, we turn our eyes and ears to Your words of tender mercy.  Rekindle in our hearts Your peace for surely they have melted with dread from Your just pronouncements against our unfaithfulness and disobedience.  Comfort Your people for Jesus’ sake, and by that mighty name, the Name above all names, we come before You.  Glory to the Father we sing and glory to  Christ our King and glory be to the Holy Spirit, one God blessed Trinity, now and forevermore.  Amen.

If you are using an advent wreath, light the first and second candles now.
Jesus Christ, You are the Light of the world that no darkness can overcome; for the shadow of death flees from You.  Keep us from sin and straighten our path, so that we may be prepared for Your coming.  Amen.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”  (Revelation 21:3-4)

MEDITATION

Let the Earth Now Praise the Lord
Heinrich Held, 1620-59; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78, alt.
Stanzas 1, 5-6

1
Let the earth now praise the Lord,
Who has truly kept His word
And at last to us did send Christ,
The sinner’s help and friend.
5
Bruise for me the serpent’s head
That, set free from doubt and dread,
I may cling to You in faith,
Safely kept through life and death.
6
Then when You will come again
As the glorious king to reign,
I with joy will see Your face,
Freely ransomed by Your grace.

SCRIPTURE

O Lord, have mercy on us.

A reading from the Prophet Malachi, beginning with the second chapter.

Thanks be to God.

You have wearied the LORD with your words. But you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?”

“Behold, I send my messenger and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.  But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.  He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD.  Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 2:17-3:5)

In many and various ways, God spoke to His people by the prophets.
But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

PRAYERS

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.

O Lord hear my prayer.
And let my cry come to You.

Lord God You are the Comforter of Your people Israel.  Merciful God, when You cast Adam and Eve out from Eden You did not send them into exile without hope, but with a promise that the seed of Eve’s womb would crush the serpent’s head. Merciful God, when You chose for Yourself a holy people through Abraham, Isaac and Jacob You built Your plan for our salvation upon promises.  Merciful Father, in the fullness of time You sent us Your Son Jesus, the fulfillment of Your promises, to save us from our sin and crush the head of the Great Serpent, who is Satan our enemy.  Merciful Father, certainly all our works will pass away, not in the waters of a flood but in the glorious light of our Lord’s returning, preserve us steadfast in Him.  For as You fashion us as a new creation through Christ our Lord, the Word made flesh, certainly what He builds within us will not pass away, but will dwell with You forever.  To You all glory be, Heavenly Father Comforter of Your people, and to Jesus Christ Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Lord have mercy,
Christ have mercy,
Lord have mercy.  Amen.

CLOSING

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.  Amen.

The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit bless and preserve us.  Amen.
